Tanaka Hidenori picks up trash every day

After coming face to face with the problem of marine debris, Tanaka has been "earth cleaning" every day between work since July 2020. He goes to the sea before sunrise, to the harbor in the evening, and picks up trash near his home on rainy days. From all his travels, he shared five of his favorite beaches with us.

Located on the east side of the island, near the village of Shiraho, you can see the sun rising over the horizon. "The morning sun is nice, but the morning glow before that is also very beautiful, so I recommend arriving about 20 minutes before sunrise."

Futanaga Coast

Approximately 5 minutes by car

This is another beach that Tanaka often visits at sunrise. "I like the line of rocks," says Tanaka. As it's near the airport, he also likes the sight of planes suddenly appearing among the greenery.

Pick up one garbage bag's worth of trash every day. It fills up in about 10 minutes.

Todoroki Coast

Approximately 10 minutes by car

Hoshino Beach is great because there are almost no man-made structures visible. There is always a lot of trash washed up here, so people come here frequently to pick it up.

This is also the site of two beach cleanups to date, involving 10,000 plastic bottles.

Hoshino Beach

Approximately 30 minutes by car

This beach is located in the city and is a place where many islanders come to relax. People often come here because trash tends to accumulate right next to the breakwater, but it's also a place of relaxation where people just want to relax.

Yashima Coast

Approximately 30 minutes by car

Nagura Bay on the west side of the island is a popular spot for watching sunsets. "The sunsets are beautiful, but the magic hour after the sun goes down is also the best. Ishigaki Island is great because you can enjoy an unobstructed view of the sky, both at sunrise and sunset."
