Taketomi Town employee Motofumi Shinmori and his wife Harumi Shinmori, a nurse

Motoshi and Harumi Shinmori are a married couple who were classmates on the island. Motoshi's life's work is to delve into the island's nature, history, and culture. Harumi works as a freelance nurse, providing physical and mental care to the island's residents. She took us to the places where she and her three boys usually hang out.

The museum displays folk materials and crafts that provide insight into Yaeyama history, culture, and lifestyles of the past. Motofumi showed interest in the museum from his first visit before he started elementary school, and has often been brought here by his parents. His three children also look around carefully and are interested.

The kamaboko shop is run by a classmate of the two. "Juicy Kamaboko" is a favorite of children, made by wrapping juicy (rice cooked with rice) with chopped peppers (pipernet imitation) in kamaboko. They often buy it and take it with them when they go out to play.

Juicy kamaboko often sells out by mid-morning, so be sure to get there early.

The National Astronomical Observatory's large radio telescope, VERA, is a facility that observes radio waves emitted from celestial bodies and is located in four locations: Ogasawara, Iwate, Kagoshima, and Ishigaki Island. It is also interesting to watch this large telescope move in sync with the celestial bodies. When the gate is open, you can also pick up a pamphlet inside.
