Naofumi Tarama, a fisherman

Naofumi Tarama is a fisherman who mainly fishes for tuna, including bluefin tuna, yellowfin tuna, and bigeye tuna. He can even catch bluefin tuna weighing several times his own weight using the single-line fishing method. What is the favorite fishing spot of this strong man of the sea, Mr. Tarama?

After crossing the Southern Gate Bridge from the city center to the reclaimed land on the other side, the area just below the bridge is Tarama's favorite spot. He likes to watch the fishing boats coming and going, saying, "I like to scout out how much that person caught today (laughs)." His father was also involved in the construction of the bridge's foundation, which is another reason why he likes this place.

Under the Southern Gate Bridge

Approximately 5 minutes by car

The fishing boat he's currently using belongs to his father-in-law, but he's in the process of modifying it so he can own his own boat. On days when he's not out fishing, he comes here to work on it. He's been modifying the boat, which he acquired from someone else, little by little each day, to make it big enough to carry large bluefin tuna and to install steering equipment. "The sea I can see while I'm working is beautiful. I also love watching the sunset from here."

Pizzeria Il Trecorde is an authentic pizza restaurant run by a classmate of mine. It's a popular spot known for its Neapolitan-style pizzas baked in a large wood-fired oven. I come here for lunch, but I also sometimes drop in for drinks in the evening.

Tarama, who loves spicy food, says her favorite is "Akahachi," which uses the island's ichimi chili pepper.

PIZZERIA IL TRECORDE

Approximately 30 minutes by car

This beach is located between the Shiraho settlement and the airport. He said that when he was a child, he often came here with his family and their dog. It's a quiet place with no people around, so he can just relax and do nothing, which is why he visits occasionally. He talked about his work, saying, "The sea is different every day, which is what makes it interesting," and it's clear that he absolutely loves the sea and his job.

Naofumi Tarama
Born on Ishigaki Island. After returning home from Tokyo, he helped his father-in-law, a fisherman, which led him to pursue a career in fishing himself. Currently, he mainly fishes for tuna, but he is striving to incorporate various fishing methods and catch a wide variety of fish.
